The Chilam Joshi Festival is one of the most culturally significant spring celebrations in Pakistan, taking place annually in the remote Kalash Valleys of Chitral. The Kalash maintain an ancient animist lifestyle that is incredibly distinct from the rest of Pakistan. Always ask for permission before taking close-up portraits, especially of women and religious Places.
Accommodation in the valleys consists of basic, rustic guesthouses. Electricity can be sporadic, and there are no ATMs in the valleys; ensure you carry plenty of local Pakistani Rupees (PKR) in cash before leaving Islamabad.
